World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong × Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival : About their identity
<2021 World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong>, which held on the first time this year, was held at the same time in conjunction with <58th Suwon Hwaseong Curtural Festival>. Let me introduce why the two festivals are related and what are the differences.
<Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival> celebrated its 58th anniversary, was a well-known and representative cultural tourism festival in Korea. As you can see from its name, <Suwon Hwaseong Curtural Festival> is a festival centered on Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a large-scale cultural and historical resource. <Suwon Hwaseong Curtural Festival> has been trying to convey the cultural values of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and King Jeongjo. And also has focused on Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a place for citizens to live, and have aimed to create a festival that citizens can enjoy together.
Previously, <Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival> tried to promote and inherit the value of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, but this <World Heritage Festival> focused more on Suwon Hwaseong Fortress's value as a World Heritage Site. <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong> focused to explore and share the background of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress' selection as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its objective and unique values recognized by the world.
In other words, <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong>, focused to share its purpose and meaning of <Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival> and focuses more on objective historical records in a more academic way to discover hidden meanings in Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.
Therefore, this <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong>, focused on the historical record of “Uigwe”. Uigwe is source that makes Suwon Hwaseong Fortress look similar to its original form despite a long, hard time. Through Uigwe, which contain detailed records of late Joseon castles, royal events, food, clothing, and culture and art, we can look back on memories that are older than the 21st century's 200th century and find value to keep.
‘Record’ and ‘Uigwe’ : The point of <2021 World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong>
As mentioned earlier, the most important things in this <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong> were Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and record of its history, Uigwe. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress can be divided into two main categories. The first one is ‘Hwaseong Songyouk Uigwe’, the report on the construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, and the second one is ‘Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe’, King Jeongjo's trip to Hwaseong Fortress and his mother Hong's 60th birthday celebration are recorded.
To add an explanation, there is a French collection of "Jeongri Uigwe written in Korean", which is an edited book that copies the above two instruments into Korean, coloring the illustrations, and organizing them more easily. <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong> focused on Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and its historical records, and held a talk concert with experts to talk about the inside of Uigwe, and a media wall exhibition that digitally expresses the inside of Uigwe. In addition, have tried to visualize the theme of these celebrations not only through event programs but also through large and small content.
In addition, we tried to express the subject visually not only through events but also the contents posted the other day. Let me introduce you to some of them.
<World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong> Poster
: A new attempt with the meaning of historical records
First, the poster, which is a main image of the festival. This poster focused on reconstructing the actual historical records using images in Uigwe. Previously, <Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival> poster expressed Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, King Jeongjo, and citizens, showing the beauty of Suwon Hwaseong's architecture, the mental value like filial piety, the thought of loving the citizens, and the joy of the festival in various way, which was the foundation of the festival. But this poster was the first time to use images in Uigwe. This attempt was also to show the difference between <Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival> and <Suwon Hwaseong World Heritage Festival>, which have already been established as cultural tourism festivals.
Against this background, <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong> Poster is expressed by citing buildings, objects, and patterns depicted in Uigwe. We chose the ‘embroidery’ to put meaning into extra symbols. Embroidery was an old art and one-sided style of record. We tried to convey the meaning of recording and reproducing historical records of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress using the old art of embroidery and we were able to work on this poster as planned when we found artist Joo Yeon Koh, who works with machine embroidery.
Poster production episode
: New results created after trial and error
There were unexpected episodes while reconstructing the records in Uigwe to make poster. Among the various episodes, we will tell you a story that occurred in the process of investigating the name and purpose of the objects in Uigwe. The names and objectives of the various objests in Uigwe were written in Chinese and were not described in detail. For example, the objects of the banquet was depicted in pictures and the names of the objects were listed. We'll give you an example of objects at banquet. First, the banquet scenes are depicted in pictures and then the names of the objects are recorded. So it wasn't easy to interpret exactly what they were. Some of them were identified only by appearance, but some had to be speculated or researched. Actually, we tried translating Chinese character from a translator at first, but we were in trouble because there were few things we couldn't translate. When we realized it, the old record was written from left to right, and the image translation was the opposite of the characters were translated.
As an example, "Samhan" in [Picture 2] looks like a colorful lucky bag, but at first we didn't know what it was, but when we looked for research materials that analyzed Uigwe, the name was actually "Handsame", long sleeves held in my arms when dancing. And the "Jun Hwa Sang" in [Picture 3] looks like a table offering snacks and alcohol, but it was used to put flowers in a vase at a banquet. So, finding out objects in Uigwe was part of poster work.
And also, there were unexpected variables because the method of making posters with embroidery was a completely new attempt. This poster will be completed by embroidering and scanning on top of the draft, but there was a problem with this scan work. At first, we worked on the poster in A1 size and scanned it with the best quality scanner, but there was a problem. The high-definition poster makes us too difficult to express the unique texture of embroidery. It wasn’t look like embroidery on the image. It was very important to express the unique texture of embroidery while converting analog embroidery into digital. To make this possible, embroidery’s actual sizes and scanner pixel selection must be done appropriately. Finally, we obtained a perfect poster after reducing the size of the workpiece, embroidery was placed again and reworked with an average pixel scanner. Based on the above explanation, constructing this poster based on historical records was a little different from previous work.
In this poster work, we worked hard to reconstruct, express in embroidery the architecture, patterns, and images of objects in Uigwe. So I hope the meaning of this poster will be conveyed well to many people.
Uigwe and other record stories contents
Although Uigwe is an important historical record in Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, but Uigwe as a memory heritage may still be unfamiliar to people. To help understand, before this <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong>, we planned contents of Uigwe and historical records series related to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and uploaded them on SNS channels such as Instagram and blogs. There are <Fall in love with Uigwe> which is comparing the current appearance of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress buildings and facilities with the original form in Uigwe, <A story of Suwon Hwaseong Uigwe> which is a short content that explains where the objects in the poster were extracted and what they were from, <Exploring the objects in poster> which is long contents, <Read King Jeongjo> that introduces King Jeongjo's vocabulary based on “Il Deuk Rok" published in the 1800s.
Some people think that historical records are too rigid and difficult. We hope that the simple content will serve as an opportunity for more people to know the existence of Uigwe and the record of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.
we hope that people will be interested in Suwon Hwaseong Fortress once again and share the pride of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a World Heritage Site with a lot of people.
