Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival, selected as a proud local festival in 2016










The 53rd Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival was selected as ‘2016 Proud Local Festival’. This awards ceremony evaluated more than 2000 domestic local festivals and selected 12 outstanding festivals. The 53rd Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival was held under the theme “In-in hwarak_communication, sharing, empathy”. King Jeongjo’s Royal Parade to his father’s tomb reenacted by Seoul and Suwon is the largest royal military parade in the capital area, and was recognized for its potential to grow and develop into a world-class tourism festival. It was broadcasted live in real time for the benefit of domestic and foreign tourists who are interested in Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival as well as the visitors to the festival, thus confirming its status as one of the most enjoyable and open festivals. The conferring of this award has confirmed that the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival held at the World Heritage Site, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, is becoming one of the leading festivals in Korea, utilizing Suwon’s differentiated cultural resources and human resources.

Reenactment of King Jeongjo Tomb Parade(King Jeongjo the Great royal procession) from Seoul to Suwon







Seoul City Government and Suwon City Government will reenact the entire ‘Hwaseong royal procession in the year Eulmyo (1795)’, which began at Changdeokgung in Seoul and ended at  Hwaseong Haenggung Temporary Palace in Suwon (46km), to celebrate 220 years of Suwon Hwaseong’s consecration. This reenactment of the royal procession, which represented King Jeongjo’s piety for his parents and love for his subjects, will help the Festival  become an event where all citizens can better communicate with each other.

Suwon's iconical traditional cultural festival, ‘Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival’, gets under way in October 2016 at Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a World Heritage built to reflect King Jeongjo the Great’s (the 22nd monarch of the Joseon Dynasty) vision to create a strong nation in addition to his piety for his father.
With a variety of performances and activities including the royal procession of King Jeongjo the Great – regarded as the highlight of the Festival – as well as a reenactment of a Jinchanyeon (60th birthday event) for Hyegyeonggung Hong, and the Suwon Lantern of Love Festival which takes place along the beautiful Suwoncheon, ‘Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival’ will entertain the eyes and ears of both domestic and international visitors! 2016 autumn, enjoy a wide range of food and attractions in Suwon, a city where culture and art from our past meets the present, and experience life as it was during Joseon Dynasty.
