Online Uigwe Story "Exploration Life of Uigwe" #2

Are you enjoying the <Exploration Life of Uigwe> series, which are telling us the story of ‘Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe’ and ‘Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe’, the documentary heritages of Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon? (You can still watch the Suwon Cultural Foundation's YouTube playlist <World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong> x <Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival>!)

In the last post, we looked at the behind story of the construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress through the story of <Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe> that Kim Chan-Soo (Dongwon High School history teacher) told us.

In this post, we will travel to the site of the King Jeongjo and his mother’s journey in the year of Eulmyo in 1795, recorded in <Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe> along with History Lecturer at Inha University, Gong-Gi-Taek. In the following video, we plan to share various stories with comedian Seung-Hee Jo, broadcaster Eun-Hyang Eom, and Dongwon High School student Jae-Hoon Lim.

Now, we will briefly introduce two stories about <Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe>.

<Exploration Life of Uigwe>: Fourth Story

____________________________________

<Exploration Life of Uigwe> in the fourth and fifth session, we will visit Hwaseong Temporary Palace and look at the memories of “Eulmyowonhaeng“ that took place on February 1795.

First, let's talk about the historical events that took place at Hwaseong Temporary Palace during the four days of Jeongjo’s 8-day journey, while looking at the illustrations (pictures) in the Uigwe.

Before starting the fourth session of <Exploration Life of Uigwe>, Gong Gi Taek lecturer tells us that <Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe> is a 'map'. Why would he say that?

The reason is that <Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe> is ‘a map-like book that allows us to find the stories of the past that have passed with time’. This means that the 8-day record contained in the Uigwe is precise and has a great value as a historical material.

If you look at <Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe>, you can see that scenes from the events that took place at Hwaseong Temporary Palace are drawn here.

In front of <Sinpungru> (the main gate of Hwaseong Temporary Palace), King Jeongjo shared the joy of his mother’s 60th birthday by giving rice and salt to the people. This 60th birthday party of Crown princess Hong became a festival throughout the whole Suwon. In total, more than 5,300 people in Suwon were given grain, and this shows how great was King Jeongjos’s love for the nation. On February 13, 1795, the birthday of King Jeongjo's mother was held in a grand way at Bongsudang.

After the death of his father, Crown Prince Sado, Jeongjo held a banquet that was expressing the gratitude to his mother who had passed through years of hardship, and the hope for a long and prosperous life. The king's filial piety to his mother in front all of the people became a great example for the public.

Of course, sharing his spirit of giving so that even the people could enjoy the feeling of this grand banquet, there is no wonder he was a role model. The story related to this continues in the fifth Uigwe expedition.

<Exploration Life of Uigwe>: Fifth Story

In the fifth session of <Exploration Life of Uigwe> we will talk about ‘Naknamheon’, ‘Deukjungjeong’, and ‘Hwaryeongjeon’.

Two big events were held at ‘Naknamheon’. One of them is the past examination, “Jeonsi”, held in front of the king on February 11, and the other is the “*YangRoYeon” given to the elderly in Suwon on February 14. You can have a look the scenes of the past examination and YangRoYeon in ‘Naknam Heonbangbangdo’ and ‘Nagnamheonyangloyeondo’.

* YangRoYeon is an event to pay respect to the elderly people.

Also, King Jeongjo the Great was a king that excelled in both literature, and martial arts. It is said that the person who hit the target the best, when practicing archery with his servants, was definitely King Jeongjo. In 'Deukjungjeongeosado', after 'Yangroyeon', there is a scene where they shot arrows and enjoyed fireworks at 'Deukjungjeong'.

Lastly, at Hwaryeongjeon, you can see the portrait of King Jeongjo in military uniform. It is said that his father, Crown Prince Sado, often wore military uniforms, so King Jeongjo wore them mainly when he visited Suwon.

How did King Jeongjo feel when he wore military uniform and visited his father's grave? Through the records in Uigwe, you not only learn the historical facts, but also have the opportunity to understand the hearts of historical figures.

So far, we have briefly introduced the story of <Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe>, focusing on Hwaseong Temporary Palace.

We completed the fifth session by reflecting on the meaning of <Wonhaeng Eulmyojeongri Uigwe> in this era, the importance of record culture, and the spirit of love and filial piety of King Jeongjo. We hope that by watching introduced <Exploration Life of Uigwe> series, you have had a chance to learn more about the story of Jeongjo’s journey in the year of Eulmyo, recorded in 1795 for 8 days.

We invite you to <Exploration Life of Uigwe>, an online story of Uigwe.
