Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Walk Course with 'World Heritage Festival : Suwon Hwaseong'

We are introducing you the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress walking course during the World Heritage Festival Suwon Hwaseong event from October 2nd to October 24th.

The festival has been mostly changed to online due to the impact of COVID-19, however, we would still like you to take a look at the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress - the background of the festival.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is already loved as an 'outing place' by many people and in this post, I will introduce a course where you can view various street sculptures while you take a walk around Suwon Hwaseong.

In this course, a total of seven locations are included.

Various sculptures are installed in various places such as the Haenggung-gil Open-Air Theater and Hwaseong Haenggung - Haenggung Plaza, and you can enjoy them while taking a walk.

We ask that you observe all sculptures safely and only with your eyes.

Let's look at the first place.

1. Open-Air Theater next to Haenggung-gil Gallery

Gyeonggi Suwon-si Paldal-gu Heanggung-ro 18

Workshop Road~ Enjoy a new experience of seeing the huge Suwon Hwaseong Fortress at the Haenggung-gil Open-Air Theater on the way to Hwaseong Haenggung.

From October 8th, you can see a large-scale miniature exhibition that reinterprets the major structures of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress in a modern way.

<Suwon Hwaseong Miniature> is lit up so that you can enjoy it beautifully even at night.

Walk around and admire the miniatures of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress made with wood. Trying to infer which building each sculpture reproduces can become a fun viewing point as well.

2. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace – Haenggung Plaza

Geyonggi Suwon-si Paldal-gu Sinpung Dong 363-31

Being considered as number one archer in Joseon, Jeongjo enjoyed archery and fireworks with his officials and the public at Deukjungjeong.

Try to find Deukjungjeongeosado expressed through augmented reality and light installations at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace and Haenggung Plaza.

At Haenggung Plaza there is also a dignified but friendly statue 'Jeongjo the Great Bodyguard' and an 'Imaginary Garden' made in the form of light. From October 8, you can also see Hwaseong Haenggung (Bongsudang and Hwaryeongjeon) decorated with large flowers.

< King Jeongo’s Bodyguard > is a modern and friendly expression of the dignified and loyal general who escorted Jeongjo during the Joseon Dynasty.

You can see him on both sides of Haenggung Plaza Hongsalmun, and although he is a general, he is very popular with his warm and cute impression~!!

<Eternal Light - New Deukjungjeongeosado> Through historical consideration, a new Deukjungjeongeosado is drawn and perforated, and a light is installed inside to show the world of dreams and ideals at the same time. When the sun goes down, the beautifully lit lights appear to be decorated with mother-of-pearl decorations.

You can meet them at Haenggung Square in front of Hwaseong Haenggung.

On the lawn next to Suwon I'Park Museum of Art you can find a color sculpture made of three pillars, that lets you experience an imaginary tree growing through the shape of light and an imaginary garden with a futuristic atmosphere.

Lights and colors are constantly changing to create new looks, and three light pillars standing in a triangular composition create a mysterious aura.

3. Haenggung Dong Cafe Street - Hwaseomun - Hwaseo Park

Take a walk along the Haenggung Dong promenade where the heart of King Jeongjo, who valued the happiness of the people, resides.

There are cute cafes, restaurants, and shops between the streets of elegant Seongan Village that keeps its old look. The shops on Haengnidan-gil and Haenggung Dong are so popular that people come from many regions to see them. Now, the lights and sculptures decorated here and there are brightening up the autumn mood of Haenggung-dong even more.

4. Hwaseo Park

Gyeonggi Suwon-si Paldal-gu Hwaseo Dong 26-17

Climb up to Hwaseo Park, where the reeds surrounding the fortress wall are swaying in the wind. There, a message of hope from the citizens, the full moon that drives away darkness, the appearance of Hwaseong Haenggung, and wooden sculptures that illuminate the architectural value of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress are in harmony with the scenery.

We hope that walking through the quiet Hwaseo Park will help you recover from today's difficult days and dream of a more hopeful tomorrow.

This is a variety of pallet structures made with the motifs of stories and emotions contained in Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and the scientific value of the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress architecture.

Meet the Seobukgak Pavilion towering over magnificent reeds and the harmonious <Suwon Hwaseong Village in Uigwe> in Hwaseo Park.

This is a project structure that is completed with the wishes of visitors during the exhibition. The moment you place your written wish on the wall, the light of your wish will light up.

Sanitize your hands with hand sanitizer, wear plastic gloves and write your wishes on the paper.

A video work that heals the pain of the past through the 'moon' that drives the darkness into the light, and prays for hope that overcomes present crisis like the colorful flowers blooming in Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.
The sight of Sinpungru in Hwaseo Park makes us feel welcome, and it contains a wonderful night view of the moon and flowers.

5. Jangan Park - Janganmun Gate
Gyeonggi Suwon-si Jangan-gu Yeonghwa Dong 349-86

In Jangan Park, you can learn about the occupations of 1840 artisans who built Suwon Hwaseong Fortress with their own two hands and get a glimpse of the Joseon craftsmen’s skills that you have never known before.

On the lawn next to Janganmun Gate, you can also meet a giant and cute bear balloon who visits in search of valuable cultural heritage.

This is a project to find out about the occupations and roles of the masters of fortification, the hidden protagonists of Hwaseong architecture appearing in the Hwaseong Fortress Uigwe.

You can appreciate the works of various craftsmen, such as stonemasons, carpenters, roof tile makers, sculptors, and wall craftsmen. Currently, for quarantine and safety reasons, you cannot go inside each structure, but you can view it from the entrance.

Cultural Heritage Visit Campaign X Bear Balloon is part of the Cultural Heritage Visit Campaign and Pop Art Artist Jibin Lim's “Everywhere” Project that involves installation of Bear Balloons on the 10 cultural heritage visit courses.

It is a campaign run jointly by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation to promote the beauty and value of our cultural heritage.

6. Bukdongporu

Gyeonggi Suwon-si Paldal-gu Buksu Dong 420

If you follow the outer fortress from Janganmun, you will be greeted by flags waving in the wind at Bukdongporu.

You can meet various creative flags under the themes of 'meeting tradition and modernity' and 'a space created with citizens'.

7. Dongbuk Poru

Gyeonggi Suwon-si Jangan-gu Yeonmu Dong San 27-18

If you go through Yongyeon Pond and enter the hill road of Bukdongporu, you can meet a space where records, fortress walls, and nature crossing the past and the present are in harmony.

The image of you walking in that place becomes the part of the history and records of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress as well.

This is a structure that conveys the greatness of records to the world by recreating past records with modern devices through a 20-meter media wall under the fortress wall.

It is a good place to take a walk and look around with the cool evening breeze. In autumn, the surrounding reed fields add an extra beauty to the atmosphere.

We introduced the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress walking course connected with colorful sculptures.

Please, do not touch any of the mentioned sculptures and observe only with your eyes.

If you want to know more about the various sculptures, please refer to the
